Have
you ever used the phrase, "don't just stand there, DO SOMETHING!"?
The thought process behind this often used phrase is "I'm
paying you so at least look as if you're being productive," or
something along that line.
In
today's competitive environment, everything is viewed from the
bottom-line viewpoint. Whatever is done must positively affect
the bottom line. Thus, "...just, DO SOMETHING!" does
not add to the bottom line.
Motion
waste is defined as:
Any
movement of people or machines that does not add value to
the product or service.
"Value-added" is
something in a process that
the customer is willing to pay for. Any motion that does not
add value is wasted. This waste can manifest itself in a number
of different ways. For example, putting completed product or
sub-assembly onto a holding shelf represents excess handling
motion that doesn't add any value to the product.
Motion
waste is very subtle and its reduction/elimination must be approached
by a systematic methodology. Reduced motion waste will allow
you to increase your productivity and product quality.
CITEC
can help identify the causes and sources of motion waste within
your operation and provide solutions.
